STANLYN, jasper

Description: Jasper Stanlyn. An angular face, strong jaw, high cheekbones. Deep-set eyes, with cheeks that start to look gaunt in the wrong lighting. A soft nose. Light blond hair, almost colourless. Crystal-cut blue eyes. (After getting into CAFE, gets contacts that turn red due to magical stuff.) Tall for where he comes from. Lanky build, but with surprising amount of muscle packed into his thin frame.



Personality: When you raise a child to believe the only way to measure someone’s worth is to measure how much they’ve done, the child takes on an attitude. It’s a very distinct attitude, one that constantly drives for success, one that sneers in the face of those who’ve fallen over. But, when you take this child away from the environment that taught them that, especially in their teenage years, the child takes on a malleable structure, with the core almost set, but able to be just barely changed.

Jasper is this child. His family is a successful family--a member of the British aristocracy, having enough investments and assets to be of notice in the grand scheme of the world, and with contacts in interesting places. He grew up to believe that his success was his only worth. Whether or not he could prove himself to take on the family business. His rebellious stage of teenagerhood ended quickly, practically never beginning at all, as he grew up respecting his elders and those in power. Or, more accurately, he wanted to be the one in power.

Meeting Isadore was the subtle change that helped mold Jasper into someone softer. He still will get angry when people are being slow, and he still believes he must be successful in order to be worthwhile, but now he stops to consider those around him. He thinks of those working under him not as pieces of the machine, but as people with histories and emotions themselves.

His struggle with emotions is not one that he considers a struggle, most of the time. Often he is unaware that people may see him as callous or rude, instead focusing on the distinct details of life, not the ineffable emotions that dominate life.

(Despite what some may believe, his parents are ecstatic at this, although it still is up to debate whether they earnestly enjoy him being a more personable individual, or if they are simply glad that he’ll be able to manipulate people better.)
